Message from the Pastor

          Greetings in the name of our risen Lord Jesus Christ!  My name is Zac Sturm and I am honored to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church.  I am new to Missouri as I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas.  I married the love of my life, Jana, in the summer of 2004.  We are currently expecting our firstborn son.  He could arrive, well, any minute now as I write this!   

          My wife and I moved to Sullivan in 2006 as I began serving as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church.   You may be wondering what that makes me . . . Lutheran? . . . Presbyterian? . . . Presbutheran?  Well, I consider myself first and foremost to be a “Christian.”  I am ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), but I began serving as pastor of First Presbyterian in the spring of 2008 as this congregation and Peace Lutheran entered into a shared ministry.  I am now “one pastor with two churches.”  The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (PCUSA) and the ELCA have been partners in ministry since 1997 when leaders of both churches signed the Formula of Agreement.  Under this agreement, ordained pastors of each denomination may serve churches of the other denomination.      

         The Lord indeed works in mysterious ways!  Never would I have imagined when I graduated from seminary that I would end up serving a Presbyterian Church in Sullivan, MO.  Yet our God of surprises is faithful, and we believe God is present and active here at First Presbyterian Church.  God nourishes our faith through the proclamation of the word and the sharing of the sacraments.  God rejoices as we grow in our faith through fellowship and educational opportunities.  And God challenges us as we share our faith through word and deed with the greater community. 

          No matter at what place you are in your faith journey, our God of surprises is calling you.  I invite you to answer and explore that call with us here at First Presbyterian Church.
